Dear Minister,

I’m writing to ask you to protect billabongs along the Darling/Baaka River.

Billabongs are the nurseries of our inland rivers. Native fish, frogs, turtles and waterbirds breed in them. But they only fill when the river rises high enough to spill into them, and right now there are no rules to stop those high flows from being pumped for irrigation before they arrive.

The Connectivity Expert Panel advised the NSW Government that large fresh flows in the Barwon-Darling/Baaka must be protected at least once every two years, for a minimum of 15 days. I urge you to adopt this recommendation and write it into the new water sharing plans for the Barwon-Darling and the northern tributaries that feed it: the Border Rivers, Gwydir, Namoi and Macquarie/Wambuul.

Environmental water should then be used to top up those flows, so more billabongs get the water they need.

Please don’t let billabongs be forgotten in these decisions.

Yours sincerely,
